Millions of consumers still rely on Windows XP and Microsoft is banking on them making the switch to Windows 7.
I found installing and working with the Windows XP Mode to be significantly easier and more satisfying than any other virtual computing environment I have used. If you have legacy peripherals that won’t work natively in Windows 7, don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of the many improvements in Windows 7. Windows XP Mode is only available for the Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. All modern enterprises must accept the fact that at some point their systems or networks will very likely experience an unauthorized intrusion of some kind.

If you receive the error "Unable to stat Windows Virtual PC because hardware-assissted virtualization is disabled", you can ignore that error for now since the Windows XP Mode update will resolve that issue. You can choose how large you want your virtual hard drive to be; the default is 40Gb, but you can choose a different size if you wish. Please note that the entire 40Gb will not be taken up on your hard drive. Our clean install only took up 1.4Gb on the computer. Windows 7 is doing much better out of the gate than Windows Vista did.

XP Mode will have an emulated graphics driver it won't have direct access to your hardware nor will it even know what it is. Find the folder we just shared from Windows 7 or Vista by clicking My Computer, then the drive that says “Shared Folders on ‘vmware-host’” or something similar. The computer hardware that you install Windows 7 and Windows XP Mode on must support hardware-assisted virtualization. What makes this a particularly sticky catch is that it sort of contradicts the purpose of Windows XP Mode. If you are still running Windows XP and using legacy hardware devices, odds are fair that you are also using older computer hardware that won’t have the required technology to use Windows XP Mode. If that is the case, you will have to buy a new system rather than simply upgrading, but you can still use Windows XP Mode to connect older peripherals. While there are a slew of clever ways to bypass this activation problem, the easiest and most recommended way to truly avoid all these issues is to simply upgrade from Windows Home Premium to Windows Professional. Upgrading also entitles you to other added features, such as host-side Remote Desktop and increased maximum RAM support.
It may offer to copy the files from your old My Documents folder to the new one; choose Yes to make sure you have all of your documents in Windows 7. You can easily access any program or file in XP mode through a dedicated XP Mode Start Menu. When you hover over your Windows 7 Start button, a new button called “Windows XP Mode” will above it.

The real advantage of the default XP Mode in Windows 7 is that the XP programs are fully integrated with their Windows 7 counterparts. You can run them seamlessly with other programs, copy between them, and even open and save files to the same folders. The tools will automatically download and install, though you may have to approve an UAC prompt. You can review and make changes here, or simply press Finish to start installing XP. You may see some prompts about installing drivers; simply approve them.
