Windows 7: What You Should Know About XP Mode

I like Windows Virtual PC, but you can definitely tell that you are taxing the system resources and things can get sluggish. Right click on Windows XP Mode base.vhd file, then select Properties. Take ownership and grant full control permissions to the Windows XP Mode base.vhd file. AlmaLinux is well on its way to becoming one of the most popular drop-in replacements for CentOS/RHEL. Anyone who has used CentOS will immediately be familiar with the operating system. Any admin who’s not used CentOS will find it as solid a platform as any other for enterprise-level computing.

As for Virtual PC currently M$ is saying that this will be available to download from the M$ Download site but it is still debatable if it will actually work on anything that isn’t supported. Now, whenever you go to save a file in XP, it will automatically save in your My Documents folder on Windows 7 or Vista, depending on your circumstance. You can repeat the same process for any folder you wish, such as your My Pictures and My Music folders. Once your computer is rebooted, start up VMware Player and insert your Windows XP CD in your CD drive. In this example we used a copy of Windows XP Professional, but it would work the same with any edition of XP. One of the cool features in Windows 7 is XP Mode.

You can even use removable devices, such as flash drives, in XP in VMware Player. Whenever you connect a new device to your computer, VMware will remind you that you can add it to XP. And notice, this is guaranteed to work on any edition of Windows 7 or Vista, including Home versions. VMware automatically detects your Windows XP CD, and says it will install it with Easy install. This will let you install XP with only 5 clicks!

We didn’t see them on our latest test, but have in the past. When you are finished installing VMware Player, you will have to restart your computer. Last week we showed you how VMware Player could help you run XP Mode without hardware virtualization. Even VMware Player doesn’t have a link to import XP Mode if you’re computer is running 7 Home Premium or Vista.

Once the tools are downloaded or updated, they should automatically run in XP. If not, click Start, then My Computer, and finally double-click on the CD drive which should say VMware Tools. However, if you have a legal copy of Windows XP, then you can easily recreate XP Mode with the free VMware Player. This article will show you how quick and easy it is to get a virtual copy of XP running on any computer, even if it’s running 7 Home Premium or Windows Vista. Anyway, it’s nice that Microsoft have made this tool available for free, which is very useful for software testing, and even better that its usable on Win 7 Home Premium, without having to upgrade to Professional.

It may have to download or update the tools, so if you see the yellow banner at the bottom of your window simply click Update Tools or Install Tools depending on you situation. Once installed you may, like me, run into the issue that hardware assisted virtualization is not enabled in your BIOS. I have a Dell laptop, and it was a matter of hitting F12 on bootup and searching around for the option in the BIOS settings.

My Open Source Software

The computer hardware that you install Windows 7 and Windows XP Mode on must support hardware-assisted virtualization. What makes this a particularly sticky catch is that it sort of contradicts the purpose of Windows XP Mode. If you are still running Windows XP and using legacy hardware devices, odds are fair that you are also using older computer hardware that won’t have the required technology to use Windows XP Mode. If that is the case, you will have to buy a new system rather than simply upgrading, but you can still use Windows XP Mode to connect older peripherals. While there are a slew of clever ways to bypass this activation problem, the easiest and most recommended way to truly avoid all these issues is to simply upgrade from Windows Home Premium to Windows Professional. Upgrading also entitles you to other added features, such as host-side Remote Desktop and increased maximum RAM support.

It may offer to copy the files from your old My Documents folder to the new one; choose Yes to make sure you have all of your documents in Windows 7. You can easily access any program or file in XP mode through a dedicated XP Mode Start Menu. When you hover over your Windows 7 Start button, a new button called “Windows XP Mode” will above it.

Click there to access a full start menu from XP Mode right in Windows 7. The real advantage of the default XP Mode in Windows 7 is that the XP programs are fully integrated with their Windows 7 counterparts. You can run them seamlessly with other programs, copy between them, and even open and save files to the same folders. The tools will automatically download and install, though you may have to approve an UAC prompt. You can review and make changes here, or simply press Finish to start installing XP. You may see some prompts about installing drivers; simply approve them.

However, it’s only available for Windows 7 Professional and above, leaving Home Edition and Vista users out of luck. Today we’ll show you how to create your own XP Mode to run on Vista or Windows 7 Home Premium. Assuming you meet all of the requirements and get Windows XP Mode installed, I believe you will be impressed. I frequently use Windows Virtual PC to be able to install and work with alternate operating system platforms.

It is a free download, but requires registration. When you purchase through our links we may earn a commission. Not to beat a dead horse, but it is very unfortunate that Microsoft did not include Windows XP Mode as an option for Windows Home Premium. Millions of consumers still rely on Windows XP and Microsoft is banking on them making the switch to Windows 7.

As good as the OS roll out is going, there are still legacy devices out there that don’t have drivers and software updates to work with Windows 7. The vast masses of users who have held on to Windows XP are particularly vulnerable to this issue which is why Microsoft created XP Mode virtualization to ease the pain of transition. One of the more interesting new tools that Windows 7 features is Windows XP Mode. Essentially, Windows XP Mode is a fully functional version of Windows XP that operates within Windows 7, much like how Parallels Desktop works on the Mac. By allowing users to seamlessly run Windows XP applications within Windows 7, application compatibility problems become virtually a thing of the past. VMware Player will automatically launch the VMware Tools installer to integrate your virtual XP with your computer.

AlmaLinux checklist: 9 things to do after installation

I found installing and working with the Windows XP Mode to be significantly easier and more satisfying than any other virtual computing environment I have used. If you have legacy peripherals that won’t work natively in Windows 7, don’t let that stop you from taking advantage of the many improvements in Windows 7. Windows XP Mode is only available for the Professional, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions of Windows 7. All modern enterprises must accept the fact that at some point their systems or networks will very likely experience an unauthorized intrusion of some kind.
